There are several glitches/word mispronunciations with SAPI 4 and SAPI 5 voices Microsoft Sam, Mike, Mary, Microsoft Anna, David, Hazel, Zira, Mark, Eva, TruVoice Voices, LH British Voices, MacinTalk Voice Alex, and MacinTalk Voice Zarvox, some of which that cause them to pronounce words incorrectly. Following is a list of mispronunciation glitches that have been found so far. Please keep this list in alphabetical order.

Note: Many of the mispronunciations from Sam are not in the Speakonia (SAPI 4) version originally in Windows 2000, although there are some Speakonia–only bugs.

Word Mispronunciations

Most famously, regardless of version, Sam cannot pronounce the word "soy" (also the spelling "soi"), but instead will make a "swurghf" sound, similar to a helicopter blade. In Speakonia (SAPI 4), one can aid this mispronunciation by typing "soei", "s'hoy" or "Swoi" instead, and SAPI 5: "soe" or "ssoy". It doesn't happen in Mary and Mike, meaning this issue seems to be specific to the voice itself. However, he can say it correctly if you type a z after the S. He also says it correctly if the word following it starts with L or W, such as "soy like" or "soy wheat". Sticky Keys XP has also found an accurate way to make him say it correctly in Windows XP (SAPI 5). To do this, type "sse loi" (s'e loi in SAPI4). However, he says "soil" correctly.

#

Anything above 5 digits and below is pronounced correctly, i.e., 54,143 is pronounced "fifty-four thousand one-hundred forty-three". Four-digit numbers are pronounced correctly in Speakonia, however.
  • Typing in "0000" results in Microsoft Sam, Mike, and Mary saying "hundred" (he pronounces each digit separately in Speakonia, however, and first and last digits have a snapping sound).
  • If a word has an apostrophe in the pronunciation, then the Speakonian version of Sam will increase the pitch.
  • If any misspelled or unknown words are in all capitals, then Sam just says the letters in the SAPI5 version, but not in Speakonia. If there are 2 letters in parentheses, then Sam will say only the first letter. If Sam wants to say the word with no stress, place the "h" before many stressed words.
  • Many words that have different spellings for British and American English have the British spelling mispronounced. e.g. favourite becomes "fav-o-rite" in SAPI4, while SAPI5, "fave-o-rite".
  • Anything with a dollar sign is pronounced as letters in the Speakonia version.

  • A number followed by ² or ³ (for example 2²) is pronounced e.g. 2 superscript 2 in Microsoft David and Zira, as well as SAPI4 voices. SAPI5 Microsoft Sam, Mike, Mary and Hazel correctly say 2 squared.
  • Special characters in SAPI5 Microsoft Sam, Mike, Mary and Anna: ú, ù, û, ü; they will pronounce as "V". ⁴, ⁵, ⁶, ⁷ and ⁸ are said as their base numbers in these four voices, ⁰ (superscript 0) is treated as a degree sign, while ⁹ is ignored; probably treated as ’.
  • ⁰, ⁴, ⁵, ⁶, ⁷, ⁸ and ⁹ are ignored in Microsoft David, Zira and Hazel.
  • In the SAPI4 voices, ⁰, ⁴, ⁵, ⁶, ⁷, ⁸ and ⁹ are treated as a question mark.
  • 2^2 is failed to be pronounced correctly by any voice. Mispronunciations include: two circumflex accent two, two caret two, two cap two, two—two, and, of course, blah.
  • If Sam says a letter and a word after saying any word that ends with the suffix -fy, followed by the word "as", he will say the suffixed word in a somewhat southern drawl. For example: "I Identify as a WTF Train" is said as "I Identifah as a WTF Train". This was fixed in the SAPI5 version.
  • Emoji will be treated as question marks in SAPI4.
  • If Sam speaks Cyrillic letters in Unicode, then he will say nothing in the SAPI5 and SAPI4 versions. Cyrillic letters can be said correctly by setting the language for ASCII programs to Russian and then installing the L&H Russian voices.
  • The letter "ñ" is treated as a question mark in all voices in SAPI4.
  • If Microsoft Sam tries to say a word starting with "OY" or "OI" after saying a word ending in "S", he will say "swah", just like a ROFLCopter.

  • Typing in "tce tce tce tce tce tce tce tttttttttttttttttttttttte" causes him to imitate the sound of an impact sprinkler. (in Speakonia, type axxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx). The tce or the tttttttttttttttttttttttte glitches do not work on David, Zira, Mark or Eva.

  • If you type in "Gyrururururururururururururururururururururu" and play it full speed with Anna, it kinda sounds like Perry the Platypus. Cannot be done in Speakonia. (confusing? Added by Gamelover101) (Modified by Vsauce Winner).
  • If you type in "Awawawawawawawawawawawawawawawa" in the SAPI5 version, Sam will make a "wogga wogga wogga" sound.
  • If you type in "Pikkada pokkada pikkada pokkada" lots of times, Sam will make the sound of a Tractor.

  • If you type in Mic a lot of times, at full speed he'll sound like a helicopter...
  • If you type in "purr" a lot of times and turn the speed up in Speakonia, Sam will sound like an engine.
  • If you type in "lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll" and put it on fast, Sam sounds like a motorcycle on XP.
  • If you type in "ng" in the SAPI5 version, Microsoft Sam makes an "ahg" sound. Speakonia Sam only says the letters. The same happens with "ey" as well.
  • Typing in "iqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq", will also make the sound of a helicopter.
  • Typing "blurg-glurg-glurg-glurg-glurg-glurg-glurg-glurg-glurg-glurgle" will make him sound like barfing.
  • Typing in "b'b b'b b'b" a lot of times will make SAPI4 Sam hum.
  • Type in, "z'x'c'v'b'n'm'z'x'c'v'b'n'm'z'x'c'v'b'n'm'z'x'c'v'b'n'm'z'x'c'v'b'n'm'z'x'c'v'b'n'm'z'x'c'v'b'n'm'z'x'c'v'b'n'm'" to make Sam beatbox in SAPI4.
  • Typing in "itxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" will make Microsoft Anna say "ee-tecker-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r" (as an electronic-like sound).
  • In SAPI4, if you type in "p'h, t'h, k'h, t'h, " several times, Microsoft Sam beatboxes. To add lyrics or different beats, you may need to adjust.
  • Typing in "ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng ng" or "ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey ey", Sam will sound like an airplane in SAPI5.

Other things Microsoft Sam can make

  • SAPI5 Sam will say things faster and lower-pitched by putting things in parentheses (()), square brackets ([]) or curly brackets ({}). In SAPI4, the lower pitch is still there, but not the faster speed (Works only with parentheses).
  • If he wants to speak the stressed word, use the exclamation mark before the non-stressed word.
