Microsoft Agent was a downloadable Windows component which allowed for interactive animated characters (known as "Agent Characters") to be used in applications, usually as assistants. One notable use of Microsoft Agent was in Microsoft Office, where a certain animated paperclip would be your assistant.

Trivia

  • The original Microsoft Agent 2.0 doesn't work correctly with Aero's desktop composition (DWM), causing a solid colored box to appear behind the character, whose color differs across assistants.
